About Dr Sandy
Dr Evans received her undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Chemistry from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1989. She continued her studies at the University of the Witwatersrand completing a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology with distinction in 1990 and a PhD (Pharmacology) in 1996. She began her teaching career at University of the Witwatersrand where she taught pharmacology to medical & science students. She published several articles in international journals.
Next she headed up the very successful Cambridge Programme, at Midrand Campus (now Midrand Graduate Institute), teaching Cambridge A level and O levels Science and Biology. While running the Cambridge Programme, she designed two unique biology undergraduate programmes which equipped science graduates with not only scientific knowledge but with business skills. The degree programmes where accredited by the Council for Higher Education and began enrolling students. In 2001, she was appointed the Head of the Science Department, the position evolved to that of Head of the Science Faculty and then to Science Academic Manager as the programme expanded. She headed up the programme during which time she taught several modules including pharmacology, biotechnology, nutraceuticals & functional foods, medicinal chemistry and bioentrepreneurship. In September 2009, she stepped down to launch Spoonful of Science. A company dedicated to helping people come to grips with the science necessary to survive and thrive in the modern world and encourage South Africans to embrace the future bioeconomy.
Dr Evans continues to teach the next generation of students the ins and outs of pharmacology & biotechnology on a part time basis. She is currently lecturing pharmacology & biotechnology at Midrand Graduate Institute and is training the next generation of podiatry and emergency medicine students at University of Johannesburg.
Dr Sandy Evans is a pharmacologist who makes “medicines” user friendly. She has taught at all the major universities in Gauteng area and presented for organisations such as AfricaBio. Not only is Dr Evans a science boffin she is well travelled. On her travels she has ridden a camel from Timbuktu out into the Sahara desert, stayed in a longhouse in Borneo and smoked a cigar in Cuba. Her most recent adventure was to Sri Lanka, the land of elephants, in June 2009. Travelling gives her the opportunity to enjoy her other major delight of photography.
